Valmai ha been a volunteer administrator at Illawarra Blue Stars Athletics Club for 58 years, starting at age 18 as Treasurer of the club and a year later elected Secretary, a position she has now held since 1964. Valmai has been a committed leader and advocate for sport in Wollongong, and has been instrumental in the establishment of the track and field program at Illawarra Sports High School.
