The Illawarra Track Classic to be held Saturday 15 January at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre has attracted some of the finest athletes in the State and promises to be a night of nonstop, high quality athletics. Our own club members have certainly showed they are prepared to take on the best in most of the events on the program. With the track ablaze with top sprinters and milers, the field events are sure to create a lot of interest with the shot and discus for both men and women, and long jump for women and triple jump for men. The Masters men’s and women’s 60m will bring some of the quickest male and female “older athletes” in not only the State, but in Australia and the World.
The added events of the Professional League over 110m and 300m will certainly add to the interest of the sport and the program along with the first mixed 800m to commence the program. Commencing at 4.30 pm and going through to 8.30 pm under the lights.
Our thanks are extended to our sponsors, mainly Wollongong City Council, Fusion Training Solutions - sponsors of the 60m titles, and Di and Robert Mitchell of Beaton Park Canteen. Our thanks are extended to Wollongong City Little A’s for use of their tents and also to Snap Printing and to the wonderful people who have given an amount to help sponsor the Mile.
Although the 60m and mile are both State title events for both men and women, the interest in the Classic events of 100m, 400m, 3km and long/triple, shot and discus, is an indication that athletes will travel to the Gong for a quality event.
My thanks are extended to all who are participating and helping us to promote our sport, to the public of Wollongong, to the officials who are giving their time and effort and also to ANSW who have confidence in us to promote such an event.
