The Australian National titles, also acting as trials for the Olympic Games has seen some outstanding performances, not only from the open athletes but also from the junior athletes who are the backbone of our sport in coming years. One of the largest programs on the calendar, the National titles have been held from U14 right through to open men and women. Conducted at Homebush, the week long program has seen some of the very best Australian athletes take part but it has also given junior athletes the opportunity of seeing some of their older “heroes of the sport” take part.
Withdrawals due to injuries
Illawarra Blue Stars had a strong squad and to make the final at these titles is a great achievement in itself. But there have been some disappointments also. Hurdler Grace Adams didn’t make it to the start line due to an injury that has put her into a boot for at least 10 days, whilst promising high /long Popolo Corey Williams was a late withdrawal due to shin splints injuries. Javelin champion, Alex del Popolo waited until the final minute but doctor’s recommendations due to an MRI on his back has determined that he will not throw in these national titles.
Lauren takes Title
Being a little disappointed not making the final of the U18 women’s 100 m, Lauren Percival certainly made up for it in the 200 m. Improving with each run, Lauren took out the title in a convincing manner, showing she can put a little disappointment behind her and move on. This talented your sprinter has a bright future ahead of her and an Australian title now behind her, is the stepping stone.
Exiting Juniors
Junior 400 m athlete Ellias Oldfield has performed at a high level and made the final of the U15 men’s 400 m. Olfield has competed well this season and to make the top 8 of national is a great reward for this promising young athlete. Brodie McCluskey can also be proud of her achievements with a final berth in both her 100 m and 200 m U15 , to finish a close 6th in both events at her first National Championship. She too is one of the club’s bright young sprinters, and along with Chelsea Ezeoke who just missed the final of her 200 m, but is improving with every run, the juniors of the club are exciting. Callum Brown is another young junior of the club who has competed well all season, but just failed to reach the final of the short sprint. Brown has recorded some great times over the 100 m this season and is showing that he will be a strong contender over 100 m and 200 m for next season.
Parry continues on with top effort
Lachlan Parry can hold his head high and competed well in his 100 m heat and although he didn’t capture his best form in these titles, he did draw the national champion in Rohan Browning. Parry has represented his State many times in national titles and is still up with the top bracket of State sprinters.
We congratulate our athletes making the State team for these national titles that has produced some outstanding athletic events, including the run of Rohan Browning over the 100 m, and a 2m women’s high jump.
